- Previous suicidal behaviors
- History of mental health problems
- History of alcohol and substance abuse
- Feelings of hopelessness
- Impulsive or aggressive tendencies
- Isolation or feelings of being cut off from others
- Experiencing a loss — ended relationship, employment, financial, or physical immobility
- Physical illness
- Access to lethal methods
- Unwillingness to seek help
