Strong African American Families is a family intervention for African American youth and their primary caregivers. The program goals are to reduce substance use and behavioral problems among youth by strengthening positive family interactions. Sessions focus on preparing youth for their teen years, and enhancing efforts by caregivers to help youth set and reach positive goals. Trained facilitators work with caregivers to address ways to monitor youth behavior and encourage adaptive ways to deal with racism. The program also helps caregivers communicate with youth about substance abuse and risky or sexual behavior.
